Are there precedents to splitting a small island into multiple nations?

Yes. Why are there two countries in a small island Hispaniola (Haiti , Dominican Republic) but only 1 country in Ceylon? Because Ceylon had 1 dominant colonial power and Hispaniola had 2 (Spanish and French). So, if Sri Lanka had 2 colonial powers, it would have been 2 countries today.

There was no respect for preexisting cultures and country like formations (kingdoms) when the nations were split 50+ years ago. Its time these errors were rectified wherever necessary (Tamil Eelam is one such necessity because of the discrimination against the Tamils)

Tamil Opinon

Tamils tried to coexist with the Sinhalese majority for several decades and they were brutally supressed and attacked before raising the demand for a separate nation (Tamil Eelam).

Sinhalese Opinion

Sri Lanka is Sinhalese land and you will be allowed to stay only as part of a united country that frames the rules for you.

Comment: A separate nation is favored for the following reasons

1. Traditional homeland: Tamils have lived on the Island in their own traditional homeland (the North and East provinces) for centuries and should be allowed to choose their path.

2. Security of the Tamil people in the future: Some form of federal/autonoums model could be considered, but that will still fail to address the security of the Tamil people from the Sinhalese majority.

3. Two state solution is well accepted by the world powers elsewhere: The Tamils seek a 2 state solution like Israel does and is supported by the US. They do not seek destruction of the Sinhalese state, but seek peaceful coexistence.
